SMOOTH ARRIVAL – EASY LIVING – SWIFT DEPARTURE

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to tell you that Newcomer’s business is up by 55% in spite of the current economic climate! While we have both doubled and quadrupled our turnover the last few years we are amazed at such a nice development and it’s certainly not just departure services. Newcomer’s relocation is a reliable partner with only one focus – being a destination service provider that delivers excellent services and maintains good, ethical relationships with our clients and partners year in and year out!

Other news are that we are as usual, continously working on developing our services and improving quality. Newcomer’s Practical Handbook, 4th edition is planned to be released this fall. We will complete the Eura Quality Seal this year. Other product developments and improvements will be presented at a later date – stay tuned!

With best regards,
Lena Rekdal

Rental Market Trends in Sweden Right Now

Kungsholmen, StockholmWhile there is certainly reason to believe that the recession will lower the rental prices, the Stockholm real estate market is still rallying and official statistics showed an 9-11% increase in prices the first quarter.

The rental prices are closely linked to the cost of buying as it’s always someone’s private home that is let out and the landlord will try to cover costs. We do anticipate that rental prices will decrease later this year. If you want more infromation about our home search services, please visit www.newcomers.se

Walk in the Footsteps of the Millennium Trilogy

Stieg LarssonStieg Larsson, the Swedish author, has gained success and popularity in many countries in Europe and even further abroad. His “Millennium Trilogy”, a series of books, which have put millions of readers on the edge of their chairs with their original characters and suspenseful plots. The first book in the series, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” has now been made into a movie and was released in Sweden in February. It is expected to come to other parts of Europe in the Spring and Summer of 2009.
There are more plans for a TV miniseries and of course, more films. Stockholm’s City Museum now offers “Millennium Tours” in both English and French during the month of May and will even accommodate groups in Italian and Spanish as well. If you are a fan, and want to walk in the footsteps of the books, this is a great opportunity.

New Routines for Civic Registration

The Swedish Tax Office, where everyone moving to Sweden needs to go to get registered, has been changing its rules and expectations. Even though the basic legislation is almost the same, the new case officers at the tax authority are often unaware of the actual rules. We are working hard to get some understanding and facilitate these issues together with the well seaoned staff at the tax authority, however there seeems to be a bumpy road ahead before the new staff and the new rules have settled and we can again work efficiently.
They have just recently changed their office location in Stockholm and have begun issuing ID cards for foreigners, which has been impossible to obtain in the past. Newcomer’s still offers help getting the ID cards through the bank, which is a much easier system, and does not require pre-payment and identity verification.
This new change in policy has kept the queues long at the tax office. Their new ”service office” is in a convenient location in the center of town. Unfortunately this means that our clients share a queue with other people applying for ID cards and other tax questions, and the wait can be quite long unless you get there early in the morning.

Swedish Chef to Release New Book

Keep your eyes open this fall because Marcus Samuelsson, the Ethiopian-born Swedish chef is planning a release of his book “The American Table”, a new cookbook with authentic American cooking, a product of his travel and reality cooking show there. His cooking boasts influences from Africa, Sweden and the US, and he has written cookbooks with all of these themes. He has now complied a collection of American recipes, with unique twists of influences from further abroad.
He co-owns the restaurants “Aquavit” in New York and now in Stockholm and Tokyo as well. To experience Swedish cuisine at its finest, visit one of these restaurants. You may be delighted to see cloudberry jam and Swedish pancakes in a new light.

Best wishes for a nice and long summer!

Sincerely,
