Newcomer’s Relocation NEWS

Fall 2009

SMOOTH ARRIVAL – EASY LIVING – SWIFT DEPARTURE

Dear Friends,

What a year!

Newcomer’s is sound and healthy, terribly busy but happy. September was the second time in Newcomer’s history when we had an all time high turnover in 14 years, January 2009 was the last time.

However our main focus isn’t fiscal, which you can see from recent testimonials from our clients featured below. This is a collection of comments made in Aug/Sept of this year.

Improvement is our guiding light – we have established a number of contacts that have cut down lead times with several authorities and companies whose services our clients rely on. We have a network of carpenters, cleaning companies and designers that we can happily recommend and that have made the transition for our clients very smooth.

Immigration is one example where we are really doing well; another is serviced apartments where we get discounted rates that we can offer our clients. The invoice naturally goes directly to the client and no referral fee is payable to us. Whatever we do is without a hidden agenda.

As part of Newcomer’s internal training program we have visited Vienna, London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and now Chicago in 2009. Writing books and creating websites is an interesting addition to our business in destination services.

In this issue I will tell you a little bit about current trends in Sweden.

With best regards,
Lena Rekdal

Immigration to Sweden

GlobeThe Immigration office in Sweden was recently rated at the bottom of all government institutions, BUT we beg to differ! Like no other government body they have seasoned and knowledgeable staff members that can answer most queries. They are steadily improving their services and are very open to listening to problems that we have had like technical issues with their website.

While it’s hard to get through to the informational service – expect 30 minutes waiting on the phone - once you get to talk to someone the information is coherent, correct and readily available. Lately we have gotten express cases handled in a matter of hours, an invaluable added benefit to our clients. For more information please visit  Newcomer’s webpage.

Personal leases – no go in landlord driven market

MovingSwedish landlords not only prefer, but most often demand corporate leases. The Swedish landlord is a private individual letting out his property during his own assignment abroad. There are three valid reasons for subletting your apartment here:

1. Studies abroad or elsewhere in Sweden

2. Work abroad or elsewhere in Sweden

3. Trial period of co-habitating with a new spouse for 6-12 months. After that you have to make up your mind.

Hence it’s very important to the landlord that the tenant is good for him and the rest of the people in the building. Presenting a private indivdual to a landlord is very difficult, especially if the budget is slim or insufficient. Recently we have had 3 cases of local hire employees and we had to contact in excess of 140 – 150 landlords for each of them where in all three cases they could see between 3-4 apartments to let. Not happy clients, uninterested landlords and not a good introduction to life in Sweden. Not much we can do about it, but a good thing to know so you can prepare your policy to reflect this if you send people here.

Johanna in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

Johanna & BevThis month our consultant Johanna Lennartson visited Orientations in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as part of our internal training program. In Singapore she met with Beverly Mayhew and in Kuala Lumpur with Pektho Lam, both fellow TIRA members.

I’m very pleased with both visits! Now I know a bit more about living and relocating to these countries. When meeting clients that have lived in either country I know the similarities and differences so I can better help them.  The visits also gave me new ideas for our office in Stockholm and I hope we will have the opportunity to work together with Orientations in the future.

Johanna at OrientationsThe culture and lifestyle is a bit different from Sweden but both cities are very beautiful and tempting and I would be happy to move there myself. I would like to send a special thanks to both Bev and Pektho that were very welcoming and friendly during my visit!

Best wishes for a productive fall!

Sincerely,

Newcomer’s is a proud member of the premier TIRA global network. In this issue we are featuring Patricia Hogan of International Relocation Services, Mexico City, Mexico. Patricia lists the five best thing about Mexico below.

1. The Mexican People.  I must begin with the real reason I am still here.  I came for 2 years and here I am almost 35 years later, still loving it because of the warm and friendly people.

2. Tourism  & Cultural Landmarks.  From oceans to mountains, from the smallest villages to the large capital, Mexico has everything for everyone.   One of my favorites is the world-renown Museum of Anthropology which documents 30,000 years of Mexican culture.

3. Educational & Social Opportunities:  We are always discussing this with our new arrivals.  Time spent in Mexico can be well utilized by learning a new language (Spanish or Nahuatl), obtaining an advance university degree in a multitude of areas; many of the universities offer programs in English and Spanish.

4.The Weather.  Where else can you live without need of heating nor air conditioning?  We are high enough in altitude that it never gets too hot and we’re far enough south that it doesn’t get very cold.

5. The food.  My favorite of all.  I grew up in Texas so I developed an early taste for Mexican food.  Upon arrival here, I found real Mexican even more divine.  I could eat their varied and flavorful cuisine every day of the year!
